Vintage handcrafted Kimekomi doll of Shirabyoshi dancer
Exquisite handcrafted Kimekomi doll of a Shirabyoshi dancer, inspired by the courtly performance traditions of the Heian period (794–1185). She is dressed in a finely patterned light blue silk robe over a vivid red Hakama trousers, which was Shinto inspired. Her costume is completed with a golden Tate-eboshi hat, flowing black hair, decorative cords and a samurai sword. Shirabyoshi women held a unique place in Japanese history, entertaining the aristocracy with music and dance during ceremonial occasions.
As a vintage piece the doll remains in good condition, though it shows soms signs of age and use. The left hand is damaged, with some fingers missing and small stains visible on the fabric. These imperfections do not detract from its beauty. A decorative piece for collectors and lovers of Japanese cultural art.
Kimekomi
The body of a Kimekomi doll is made of ‘toso‘, a paulownia wood sawdust mixed with wheat starch paste, after which it is artfully covered with various silk woven fabrics. The head is made of bisque clay covered with a top layer of ‘gofun‘ (white seashell pigment). The hands of this doll are made of polyethylene.
