AOIKUMA – Vintage noren in camel brown with Shodō calligraphy
Vintage Noren curtain made from sturdy cotton in an camel brown tone, featuring a Shodō calligraphy design.
The calligraphy on these noren shows the well-known Japanese life saying — あおいくま (Aoikuma), which serves as a life advice for a positive attitude:
あ — あせるな (Don’t rush / Don’t panic)
お — おこるな (Don’t get angry)
い — いばるな (Don’t be arrogant)
く — くさるな (Don’t become discouraged)
ま — まけるな (Don’t give up)
The signature shows that this noren is most likely based on shodō by Shimizu Kosho (1911-1999), a Japanese Buddhist monk, calligrapher and artist. He was the 207th Chief Abbot of Tōdai-ji Temple in Nara, Japan. He developed his own playful style of calligraphy and painting.

How to hang a Japanese Noren: simply slide a tension rod or a wooden rod through the fabric sleeve at the top. You can also attach it to a wooden door frame using a few small pins. Rod and pins are not included.
