AOIKUMA – Vintage noren in camel brown with Shodō calligraphy
Vintage Noren curtain made from sturdy cotton in an camel brown tone, featuring a Shodō calligraphy design.
It shows 自戒自守 meaning ”Discipline yourself and stay true to your principles.” It features some life advices for a positive attitude:
あせるな (Don’t rush / Don’t panic)
おこるな (Don’t get angry)
いばるな (Don’t be arrogant)
くさるな (Don’t become discouraged)
まけるな (Don’t give up)
The signature shows that this noren is most likely based on shodō by Shimizu Kosho (1911-1999), a Japanese Buddhist monk, calligrapher and artist. He was the 207th Chief Abbot of Tōdai-ji Temple in Nara, Japan. He developed his own playful style of calligraphy and painting.

How to hang a Japanese Noren: simply slide a tension rod or a wooden rod through the fabric sleeve at the top. You can also attach it to a wooden door frame using a few small pins. Rod and pins are not included.
