Large Gunma kokeshi with carved flowerdesign

This sturdy handmade Gunma Kokeshi doll is by Japanese multi-award winning master Usaburo Okamoto (1917-2009). Gunma prefecture is the top producing area of creative (Sosaku) Kokeshi in Japan. Gunma Kokeshi dolls often feature bobbed hair and a plump round body. This doll is named ‘Sachi no Hana‘ (Happy flower). Look at those beautiful flowers handcarved in the body, such a stylish design! The Kokeshi dates from March 30th 1983 (Showa ’58), handwritten on the bottom. It is a rare big version of Usaburo, which I haven’t seen before. This special Kokeshi doll is in good vintage condition.
