Traditional fat round Kokeshi in Yajirō style
Vintage fat round Kokeshi doll in traditional Yajirō style, handmade by Sato Koichi (1936 -) in Yajiro-machi, Miyagi prefecture in northern Japan. This tough fellow certainly won’t fall over, made of Mizuki wood. The characteristic Kimono details are handpainted on his body. The black rings on the body and head are painted by hand using a potter’s wheel. One must have a steady hand to do this. The craftsman signed it at the bottom. Also notice the subtle hairlines all around and his cute facial expression. This doll dates from around the 1960s and is in good vintage condition.
