Vintage handcrafted Kimekomi doll with horse
Vintage Japanese doll handmade in the Kimekomi technique. The doll wears a burnt-orange kimono and a beige brocade silk hakama with traditional woven motifs. It features a delicately hand-painted face and beautifully colored decorative details.
This Kimekomi doll is holding a horse, a traditional symbol of strength, vitality, and a promising future, and also associated with the Japanese zodiac sign of 2026. Such figures were often displayed to wish children health and courage.
The doll is in good vintage condition; please note that one paper ear of the horse is missing. It comes with a black lacquered footplate. A beautiful and authentic vintage find from Japan.
Kimekomi
The body of a Kimekomi doll is made of ‘toso‘, a paulownia wood sawdust mixed with wheat starch paste, after which it is artfully covered with various silk brocade fabrics. The head is made of bisque clay covered with a top layer of ‘gofun‘ (crashed oyster shell). Read more about this special Kimekomi technique on my About page.
