Vintage Japanese Kimekomi Doll set – Handmade
This charming vintage Kimekomi doll set from Japan dates to the 1980s and features a beautifully dressed couple in traditional brocade and chirimen silk Kimonos. Their delicate, expressive faces and detailed attire reflect the refined craftsmanship of this traditional Japanese art form.
The dolls are handmade using the Kimekomi technique: the bodies are sculpted from toso (a mix of paulownia wood sawdust and starch), dressed in fabric that is carefully tucked into carved grooves. The heads are bisque clay with a smooth gofun (crushed seashell pigment) finish, and the hands are made of polyethylene. These dolls are in good vintage condition and make a unique addition to any collection of Japanese art or vintage decor.
Take a close look at the photos to see the fine details and gentle expressions. Learn more about the Kimekomi technique on my About page or watch the making process in the final slide.
