Vintage Kimekomi doll – Kabuki lion dancer
This vintage Kimekomi Ningyō doll represents the red lion from the classical Kabuki play Renjishi.
The doll features a serene white face, vibrant red hair and is dressed in bright patterned brocade robes. Renjishi tells the story of a lion dance performed by a father and son lion, symbolizing the passing of strength and legacy from one generation to the next. A nice piece of Kabuki drama for any interior.
In good vintage condition.
Kimekomi
The body of this Kimekomi doll is made of ‘toso‘, a paulownia wood sawdust mixed with wheat starch paste, after which it is artfully covered with various silk brocade fabrics, pressed into carved groove. The face and hands are made of a synthetic material. Read more about this special Kimekomi technique on my About page.
