Vintage silk Kimekomi doll – in traditional Japanese attire
Vintage silk Japanese doll handmade using the traditional Kimekomi technique. It wears traditional silk attire, holds a decorative fan and features a delicately hand-painted face.
This large doll wears a kanmuri, a traditional ceremonial headpiece historically worn by Japanese nobles and samurai at the imperial court. Today, it is worn only by the imperial family and government officials. Dolls like this were traditionally displayed to wish children health, strength, and courage.
In very good vintage condition and comes with a black lacquered display base. A charming and authentic piece that adds a subtle touch of Japan to your interior.
Kimekomi
The body of a Kimekomi doll is made of ‘toso‘, a paulownia wood sawdust mixed with wheat starch paste, after which it is artfully covered with various silk brocade fabrics. The head is made of bisque clay covered with a top layer of ‘gofun‘ (crashed oyster shell). Read more about this special Kimekomi technique on my About page.
