Vintage Hina dolls – 3 court ladies
Vintage Hina dolls representing 3 court ladies, part of a complete Hina Matsuri set of 15 dolls. These dolls are handmade in traditional Kimekomi technique. The bodies of Kimekomi dolls are made of ‘toso‘, a paulownia wood sawdust mixed with wheat starch paste, the dolls are artfully covered with genuine silk. Each of their kimonos features various royal symbols and floral patterns incorporated in gold thread. The faces and hands are made of a synthetic material. These dolls date from around the 70’s and are each in good vintage condition.

About Hina Matsuri: Each year on March 3 families in Japan celebrate Hina Matsuri, the Girls’ Festival, during this day a Hina doll set is displayed in various homes. The full set of dolls represent the emperor, empress, 3 court ladies, 2 ministers, 5 musicians and 3 servants. Hina Matsuri is a celebration dedicated to girls, during this day parents pray for the good health and happiness of their daughters. Around this time the peach trees are in bloom and that is why the festival is also called ‘Peach festival’.
