ETSUKO – antique silk Meisen Haori (Kimono jacket) in plum color with floral design
Antique silk Meisen Haori (Kimono jacket) in a rich plum color, featuring a bold floral design. The different pre-colored threads give the silk a subtle shimmer, especially when it catches the light. Meisen silk has a sturdy, almost cotton-like feel, with a subtle sheen.
With its bold floral pattern, this Haori is surprisingly easy to combine. As you can see in the photos, it works with all kinds of colors and outfits. Wear it your way.
The silk lining features a colorful Temari ball pattern, symbolising good luck and happiness. When worn, the lining peeks out at the sleeves, which adds a lovely flash of color.
Dating from around the 1930s-1940s, this Haori is in good antique condition.
There are a few small stains mainly on the collar, though barely noticeable due to the bold design.
I named this piece Etsuko, a Japanese girl’s name meaning “happy child”.
The pink Obijime shown is not included, but is available separately in my shop.

A little about Meisen:
Meisen is a type of silk that became especially popular in Japan during the 1920s and 1930s. It is known for its bold, colourful designs and distinctive shimmering effect, created by the use of differently coloured pre-dyed threads woven in an ikat-like technique. Designs were often influenced by Western art movements such as Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Expressionism.
