Vintage Japanese lacquerware tray

This vintage tray features a colourful composition of circles in black, dark green, red and brown, creating the characteristic spinning-top design known as Koma-nuri, a lacquerware style from Kagawa Prefecture. The circular pattern is created by applying layers of coloured lacquer while the piece is rotated.

The koma is traditionally considered a lucky motif, symbolising smooth progress and prosperity. Kagawa has a long tradition of lacquerware dating back to the Edo period.

A practical and decorative tray that also works beautifully as a display piece or base for objects.

Good vintage condition, dating from around the 1970s.
