Elegant Kokeshi lady by Sato Suigai
Handmade vintage Kokeshi doll by Japanese master Sato Suigai (1920 – ), born in Yoshioka, Gunma prefecture. His name is a pseudonym and is taken from the name of his teacher Mr. Suiun Komuro under whom he had studied Japanese painting at the age of 18. From 1949 he started making Kokeshi dolls, receiving numerous awards including the prestigious Prime Minister Award in 1966. He also studied fashion design, engineering and mechanics. In the 1970s, his artistic talent was recognized by the imperial family of Japan, under the reign of the former emperor Akihito.
This beautiful vintage lady wears a black kimono with hand-painted golden and silver colored strokes, the sakura flowers are carefully carved in the wood. This Kokeshi doll is in good vintage condition.
