Kokeshi set by master Usaburo Okamoto
Look at the beautiful woodgrains of this Kokeshi set! These are handmade Gunma Kokeshi dolls by Japans famous multi-award winning master Usaburo Okamoto (1917-2009). Gunma prefecture is the top producing area of creative (Sosaku) Kokeshi in Japan. Gunma Kokeshi dolls often feature bobbed hair and a plump round body. Usaburo introduced the use of Keyaki wood (also know as Zelkova), highly prized by Japanese woodworkers for its beautiful grain. He also used a new method of carving and burning instead of using paintbrushes. These Kokeshi dolls are made of Keyaki wood. The small doll is named Harvest, as seen by the wheat carved in the body. The tall one has Kiku flowers (chrysanthemum) carved in the body. The small Kokeshi dates from October 17th 1987 (Showa ’62), as seen written on the bottom. The tall one also dates from the 80s. Both Kokeshi dolls are in perfect vintage condition.
