MIHOKO – Vintage Cherry Red Shibori Haori – Unworn
This striking vintage Haori (Kimono jacket) is made from vibrant cherry red silk, hand-sewn and finished using the traditional Japanese Shibori technique. Applied entirely by hand, the dyeing process creates an elegant floral pattern that showcases true craftsmanship. The silk is soft, lightweight, and fluid, offering effortless movement and a sense of refined elegance.
The interior features a rayon lining with a geometric print, and the Haori closes with its original pink silk Himo cords—unused, just like the garment itself. Dating from the 1950s to 1960s, this piece is in superb, unworn condition, with the original tailor’s basting threads still intact, which can easily be removed. A timeless and wearable work of art. Mihoko is a Japanese girl’s name meaning “a child who preserves beauty”—a fitting reflection of this piece’s enduring charm.
The beautiful refined pattern of this silk Haori is made using the Shibori technique, a Japanese manual tie-dye technique that originated in the 8th century. With thin threads, countless small dots are accurately tied into the fabric, after that the fabric is dyed by hand. When the threads are removed, a refined uneven pattern appears. Making Shibori textiles is very time-consuming and requires a lot of skill and focus. The word Shibori comes from the Japanese verb shiboru which means ‘to wring or pinch’. There are many ways to bind Shibori fabric, resulting in many different patterns. The structure of silk Shibori fabric feels very pleasant and soft.
