Traditional large Kokeshi in Tsuchiyu style
Large traditional Kokeshi doll hand made by master Abe Kazue (1937 – 2017) in the Tsuchiyu style. This style originates from Shinchi in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan. This Kokeshi doll is hand turned and painted and has the artist’s signature on the bottom. Kazue was known for painting horizontal lines, a characteristic face and the red curly lines on the head. The head on this example squeaks when turned, this was originally designed to imitate the sound of a baby crying. Kokeshi dolls were originally created as kids toys.
