Traditional Tsugaru Kokeshi with Daruma-e by Senzo Mouri

A unique vintage Daruma-e Kokeshi by Senzo Mouri (1916 – 2003), in Tsugaru style. As the eldest son from the Mouri family in northern Aomori prefecture, Senzo learned woodworking and Kokeshi doll making under the guidance of his father Shigetaro Mouri (1890 – 1955), a well-known Tsugaru Kokeshi craftsman. The Mouri family are the most famous artisans of the Tsugaru style and their dolls have become icons of traditional Kokeshi. Especially this design here with the cheerful face and the Daruma-e painting on the body, a characteristic of the Tsugaru style. The purple and green paint in particular are very sensitive to sunlight, these painted lines had some slight fading over the years. Furthermore, this Kokeshi is in good condition and dates from the 1970s.
