Vintage chestnut wooden kokeshi by Usaburo
Look at these beautiful woodgrains! This vintage handmade Gunma kokeshi doll is by famous award winning master Usaburo Okamoto (1917-2009). Gunma prefecture is the top producing area of creative (sosaku) kokeshi in Japan. Gunma kokeshi dolls often feature bobbed hair and a plump round body. This kokeshi has a nicely decorated body, hand painted with white and red flowers and burned lines. Usaburo introduced the use of chestnut and keyaki wood because of its beautiful woodgrains, he also used a new method of carving and burning instead of using brushes. This kokeshi is dated around 1970-1980 and it’s in perfect vintage condition.
