Vintage Daruma Kokeshi doll
Vintage Daruma Kokeshi modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. Daruma is Japanese for Dharma, the abbreviation for Bodhidharma. A Daruma doll is considered a symbol of luck and perseverance. It represents optimism, happiness and willpower. The Daruma also protects against all evil with its stern gaze.
This doll is hand-painted by Seifu Gono and made of Keyaki wood (also known as Zelkova), highly prized by Japanese woodworkers for its beautiful grain. It is finished with lacquer, and in good vintage condition.
