Vintage handmade Warrior doll in Kimekomi style
I found this beautiful vintage warrior (Samurai) doll made in traditional Kimekomi style. It comes with the original wooden plate with signature of the maker. This doll is a Gogatsu doll (‘May doll’). Each year on May 5th Japan celebrates ‘Children’s Day’ (Kodomo no hi). Originally a celebration for boys known as Tango no sekku, the day is celebrated by displaying ‘May dolls’ made specially for this festival to wish good health and fortune for their sons. This doll is in good vintage condition. Such a beautiful vintage object from Japan for your interior, handmade and authentic.
The body of a Kimekomi doll is made of ‘toso‘, a paulownia wood sawdust mixed with wheat starch paste, after which it is artfully covered with various silk woven fabrics. The head is made of bisque clay covered with a top layer of ‘gofun‘ (white seashell pigment). Read more about this special Kimekomi technique on my About page.
