Vintage Kokeshi dolls in Yajirō and Matagoro style
Charming vintage Kokeshi dolls from the 1960s. The taller right doll is a Matagoro Kokeshi by Yashima, handcrafted from one piece of wood with subtle black and gold painted details.
The left Kokeshi doll is a Yajirō style kokeshi by artisan Hamatzu Heizaburo, handcrafted from Mizuki wood. The characteristic Kimono details are hand painted on his body. The black rings on the body and head are skilfully applied using a potter’s wheel. One must have a steady hand to do this. Note the delicate hairlines and the dolls cute facial expression.
Both dolls are in good vintage condition. For collectors or anyone who loves traditional Japanese folk art.
