Vintage silk Kimekomo doll in beige kimono
This vintage Kimekomi doll is dressed in a brocade woven silk Kimono in warm beige, featuring a burgundy and golden floral design along the lower section. She wears a bright red Obi at the waist and carries delicate paper flowers carrying in her hands. Dating from around the 1970s and in good condition.
The body of a Kimekomi doll is made of ‘toso‘, a paulownia wood sawdust mixed with wheat starch paste, after which it is artfully covered with various silk woven fabrics. The head is made of bisque clay covered with a top layer of ‘gofun‘ (white seashell pigment). Read more about this special Kimekomi technique on my About page or watch the video in the last slide.
