Fuyuko – silk Shibori Haori (Kimono jacket) in navy blue

I found another beautiful Shibori Haori, this one is made of dark navy blue silk. This Haori (Kimono jacket) is handmade in Japan and features a flower on both sleeves and a beautiful floral pattern on the back. The hand-woven silk cords are included. This Kimono jacket is in very good condition and dates from the 1970s. Fuyuko is a Japanese girl’s name and means ‘winter child’.

The beautiful refined pattern of this silk Haori (Kimono jacket) is made in the Shibori technique, a Japanese manual tie-dye technique which originated in the 8th century. Japanese Shibori artists use threads to meticulously tie many small dots into the fabric and then hand-dye the fabric. When the threads are removed, an uneven pattern appears. A technique which is much more intricate and detailed compared to the modern tie-dye technique. Making Shibori textiles is very time consuming and requires great skill and focus. The word Shibori comes from the Japanese verb shiboru meaning ‘to wring or squeeze’. There are countless ways to tie, sew, fold or twist fabric to make Shibori, each resulting in very different patterns. The structure of silk Shibori fabric feels very pleasant and soft.
