A truly stunning, antique silk Meisen Haori in deep black with a wine red pattern. A characteristics of Meisen silk is that it shines with a shimmering iridescent color when exposed to light. With its bright red silk lining this antique Haori is a true jewel. It is extra long and has elegant long sleeves. The bright red silk lining has been repaired by hand in a few places, using the traditional Japanese Boro technique. So two traditional crafts in 1 find! And the handmade silk Obijime cord in matching color is included. This antique beauty is in perfect condition, no defects. Hideko is a Japanese girl’s name that means ‘excellence, beauty’.
Meisen silk is a traditional weaving technique from Saitama prefecture handmade of raw spun silk. At first the loose silk (parallel) warp threads were dyed using stencil printing, this way the fabric became reversible with the same pattern on both sides. The threads were then set in a loom, after which the (horizontal) weft threads were woven. The warp threads and the weft threads were of different colors which creates its subtle sheen. The threads were slightly misaligned to create the ikat pattern, which creates Meisen characteristic refined lines in the fabric.
Meisen silk was first produced in the late 19th century and became very popular in Japan in the 1920s and 1930s. It is nowadays very rare and hard to find. Patterns on Meisen were often brightly colored, largely abstract, bold geometric patterns and exotic flowers. The designs were influenced by the West, such as Art Nouveau, Expressionism and Art Deco. I recently visited a traditional Meisen silk weaving studio in Saitama, Japan. Today there are only 3 weaving mills left in Chichibu, Saitama. You can see a short impression of my visit on my instagram account.
