NOZOMI – Vintage silk Haori with stunning Shibori design
I found this one-of-a-kind vintage silk Haori (Kimono jacket) and was immediately drawn to its stunning Shibori design of chrysanthemum (Kiku) flowers and flowing water. A combination of blue, coral red and white tones.
Hand-sewn and hand-dyed using various traditional Shibori (tie-dye) techniques, it is a true work of art.
This Haori is lined with smooth rayon featuring a delicate floral motif combined with the traditional Sayagata pattern (symbol of prosperity and longevity). Dating from around the 1960s, it remains in good vintage condition.
I named it Nozomi, a Japanese female name meaning “hope” or “desire”.
Shibori
A Japanese manual tie-dye technique that originated in the 8th century. With thin threads, countless small dots are accurately tied into the fabric, after that the fabric is dyed by hand. When the threads are removed, a refined uneven pattern appears. Making Shibori textiles is very time-consuming and requires a lot of skill and focus. The word Shibori comes from the Japanese verb shiboru which means ‘to wring or pinch’. There are many ways to bind Shibori fabric, resulting in many different patterns. The structure of silk Shibori fabric feels very pleasant and soft. Watch the video about how Shibori is made in the last slide.
