Hanamasu – vintage silk Shibori Haori with handpainted rose design
This vintage Shibori Haori is hand-sewn and features a beautiful hand-painted design of roses. The cream-colored silk is completely worked with the Shibori technique (also watch the video), the roses appear to be hand-painted instead of dipped in a color bath. This is also visible through the unevenness in the drawing, a beautiful wabi-sabi effect (the Japanese beauty of imperfection). This Haori has been worn with love and shows some tiny stains in the lining, on the edges of the sleeves, and on the collar (see last photo), hence the reduced price. Shibori is tied with strings, which sometimes gives off color on the the upper tiny bulbs of fabric. Also cream is a sensitive color, but let’s be honest, this is a gem! So much love has been put into this. The silk hand-knotted Himo cords are included and the lining is made of silk. Hanamasu is the Japanese red rose.
The beautiful refined pattern of this silk Haori is made in the Shibori technique, a Japanese manual tie-dye technique which originated in the 8th century. Japanese Shibori artists use threads to meticulously tie many small dots into the fabric and then hand-dye the fabric. When the threads are removed, an uneven pattern appears. Making Shibori textiles is very time consuming and requires great skill and focus. The word Shibori comes from the Japanese verb shiboru meaning ‘to wring or squeeze’. There are countless ways to tie, sew, fold or twist fabric to make Shibori, each resulting in very different patterns. The structure of silk Shibori fabric feels very pleasant and soft. Watch the video on how Shibori is made.
