Suiko – vintage indigoblue Shibori Haori
Vintage Shibori Haori hand-sewn from a soft indigo blue silk with a special motif on the back, sleeves and one front panel. This Kimono jacket is hand-worked with the traditional Japanese Shibori technique. It comes with the small silk Haori Himo cords and has a silk lining in light blue. The sizing of most Haori in my webshop are suitable for sizes S to L, and as you can see, this Haori can also be worn when you are pregnant.
This vintage gem dates from around the 1960s and is in perfect vintage condition. Suiko is a Japanese name that means ‘water tiger’ or ‘water child’. Suiko was also Japan’s first female emperor, she reigned from 593 until her death in 628.
The beautiful refined pattern of this silk Haori is made in the Shibori technique, a Japanese manual tie-dye technique which originated in the 8th century. Japanese Shibori artists use threads to meticulously tie many small dots into the fabric and then hand-dye the fabric. When the threads are removed, an uneven pattern appears. Making Shibori textiles is very time consuming and requires great skill and focus. The word Shibori comes from the Japanese verb shiboru meaning ‘to wring or squeeze’. There are countless ways to tie, sew, fold or twist fabric to make Shibori, each resulting in very different patterns. The structure of silk Shibori fabric feels very pleasant and soft. Watch the video on how Shibori is made.
