Vintage hanging scroll (Kakejiku) with Sumi-e painting of plum blossom
Vintage Kakejiku hanging scroll with an original Sumi-e painting of a plum blossom branch. Sumi-e is a Japanese painting technique (originally from China) with washed ink on washi paper.
The ink layer can vary from deep black to silver gray. As long as the ink is wet, new layers can affect the underlying layers, or ‘wash’. Once dried, an ink stroke cannot be adjusted. This makes painting in washed ink a technique that requires great skill and concentration. Many artists practice basic strokes for years to achieve perfect brushstrokes and ink flow.
The brocade silk is carefully mounted on the edges. It has a sturdy wooden rod Jikusaki on the bottom to keep it hanging straight and prevent swaying. This Kakejiku dates from the 60s and is in good vintage condition. Can easily be rolled up for storage. Kakejiku is a hanging scroll of a Japanese painting or calligraphy on paper or silk. Kakejiku is used to spread Buddhism in Japan. Within the Japanese culture it is populair as interior decoration in a tatami room, a tea ceremony room or in a Buddhist altar.
