Vintage set Hina dolls of Emperor and Empress
Beautiful vintage set of two large Hina dolls representing the Emperor and Empress, traditionally displayed during the Japanese Hina Matsuri (Girls’ Festival). The dolls are handcrafted in the traditional Kimekomi style. In this technique, the bodies are made from toso, a mixture of paulownia wood sawdust and wheat starch paste, carefully covered with finely woven silk fabrics that are pressed into carved grooves. Read more about the special Kimekomi technique on my About page or watch the video (last slide). The faces and hands are made of a synthetic material.
The Emperor and Empress wear detailed court costumes inspired by the Heian period, featuring multiple layers of embroidered silk in harmonious colors. A folding screen is included and can be displayed with either the decorative patterned side or the gold-colored side facing forward.
This set dates to approximately the 1970s and remains in very good vintage condition overall, with no discoloration. Please note that the hands of both dolls are partly damaged/broken. Some additional dolls from the same original set are available in my shop, click here.
