Vintage hanging scroll (Kakejiku) of Izumo Taisha Shrine
This vintage Japanese hanging scroll (Kakejiku) features an illustration of two Japanese gods above a vertical calligraphed text. The two gods, Okuninushi and Kotoshironushi, are pictured with their usual items, sitting on rice bags and fishing equipment.
They are enshrined in many Shinto shrines throughout Japan, with the Grand Shrine of Izumo Taisha in Shimane prefecture being the most reminent of these. Kotoshironushi is the son of Okuninushi, the earthly God of Izumo. In Japanese mythology Kotoshironushi was an adviser to Empress Jingū. He was also one of the eight deities charged with protecting the Imperial Court. The calligraphed text is signed by an official of the Izumo Taisha Shrine.
The scroll is fully backed with thin, sturdy paper and can easily be rolled up for storage. It dates from the 60s and is in vintage condition: small stains and light creasings due to age. Please check the photos.
Kakejiku is a hanging scroll of a Japanese painting or calligraphy on paper or silk. Kakejiku is used to spread Buddhism in Japan. Within the Japanese culture it is populair as interior decoration in a tatami room, a tea ceremony room or in a Buddhist altar.
