Mai – vintage silk Kimono jacket (Haori) in red-orange
A real showstopper! This vintage Shibori Haori is hand-sewn in Japan, the supple silk is tie-dyed in red and orange and finished with the traditional Japanese Shibori technique, with a stunning floral pattern. The silk pink lining has a refined woven Sayagata pattern, which represents life and strength. On top of that a lush print of cream-colored flowers, outlined with silver.
This Kimono jacket is in perfect vintage condition. This Haori has a slightly longer length and this also applies to the sleeves, which makes it look very elegant when worn. It comes with the small silk Haori Himo cords. The long silk Obijime cord is not included (available in my shop). This vintage gem dates from around the 1950s-60s. Mai is a genderneutral Japanese name, meaning ‘dance’ or ‘affection’.
The beautiful refined pattern of this silk Haori is made in the Shibori technique, a Japanese manual tie-dye technique which originated in the 8th century. Japanese Shibori artists use threads to meticulously tie many small dots into the fabric and then hand-dye the fabric. When the threads are removed, an uneven pattern appears. Making Shibori textiles is very time consuming and requires great skill and focus. The word Shibori comes from the Japanese verb shiboru meaning ‘to wring or squeeze’. There are countless ways to tie, sew, fold or twist fabric to make Shibori, each resulting in very different patterns. The structure of silk Shibori fabric feels very pleasant and soft. Watch the video on how Shibori is made.
