Antique Hina Matsuri doll of court lady – Meiji era c1900
Antique Hina doll, dating from the Meiji period – c 1900. Handmade in a renowed doll workshop in Kyoto and exhibited several times in small museums in Japan during Hina Matsuri. Every year on March 3rd, families in Japan celebrate Hina Matsuri, the doll festival or girls’ festival, to wish for good health and prosperity for their daughters. This doll is part of a complete set of 15 Hina dolls, representing the emperor, empress, court-ladies, ministers, musicians and servants. A Hina doll symbolizes protection and prosperity.
This antique doll represents a court lady. Her kimono is made of a cotton canvas fabric, the body is made of cardboard filled with sawdust. Her face and hands are handmade from bisque clay on wood, covered with a top layer of ‘gofun’ (crushed oyster shell). She is old and shows some signs of age; small chips on her face and her hair is a bit messed up, further on in good condition for her age. A lovely antique doll that adds a touch of Japanese culture and craftsmanship to your interior.
