Sakurajima Ogojo girl – vintage Japanese clay doll
Vintage Japanese clay doll of an Sakurajima Ogojo girl from Kagoshima. Ogojo is Kagoshima dialect for ‘young woman’. This girl, wearing her cute Igeta pattern Kimono, just harvested a Sakurajima Daikon, known as the largest radish in the world. To this day, these giants are still harvested on the former island of Sakurajima, Kagoshima prefecture. Hakata clay dolls are handmade from sturdy unglazed clay and slowly fired from low to high temperature. The face is covered several times with gofun, a white pigment made from shells. The dolls are completely hand-painted. This doll dates from the 1970s and is in good vintage condition. There is a non-slip sticker on the bottom. Isn’t she cute?
