1960s Men’s silk Hakama in a refined patterned dark chocolate brown (Kurocha) and black interior. A hakama is traditionally worn over a kimono for formal occasions. This is an andon hakama (lantern-style Hakama), it has an undivided, skirt-like fit. The other traditional style is the umanori hakama (horse-riding style), which has divided legs.

A hakama has four straps for tying around the waist and a high back panel called the koshi-ita. Inside, you’ll find an embroidered name, a charming reminder of its history. The small spoon-shaped detail is called a hera and can be tucked into the obi belt to keep the Hakama securely in place when worn traditionally.

But you certainly don’t need to wear it with a kimono! I love to style it as a statement skirt, paired with a simple black T-shirt and leggings. You could also wear it with trousers, tights or another undergarment. Just note the wide openings at the hips, so something underneath is recommended.

Unisex and wonderfully versatile, wearing a hakama is a unique way to make a fashion statement with a true Japanese vibe. 🇯🇵
