Soroban – vintage wooden abacus

Vintage handmade Soroban (abacus) from Japan. This wooden Soroban dates from the 1950s. It has fifteen bars with six wooden beads each: one individual bead has a value of five, called go-dama, and four beads each with a value of one, called ichi-dama. A number of names are engraved by hand on the back. The soroban is still used in Japan, despite the rise of affordable electronic and digital (pocket) calculators.
